Wine Down in Central PA

Drinking wine is all about the experience. It is becoming increasingly popular to go straight to favorite local vineyards and enjoy an afternoon or evening with wine and laughs on the lawns. Central Pennsylvania offers the perfect setting for your friends to get together and drink wine in a relaxing environment to enjoy the summer hours.

One wouldn’t think of Pennsylvania as a wine producer, but due to its well-draining soil and diverse climate, vineyards are able to produce wines from native grapes or hybrids. According to Pennsylvania Wine Trails, South Central Pennsylvania is host to three of the largest wine trails in PA, the Mason Dixon Wine Trail, the Hershey-Harrisburg Wine Trail, and the Sweet Arrow Wine Trail.

Get to know the red barn at Adams County Winery in Orrtanna, PA. The vineyard Is located not far from the battlefields of Gettysburg. There are three locations, and you want to go to the Farm location on Peachtree Road. It is a gorgeous drive on winding roads of Adams County. The farm location offers tours, tastings and other events such as their summer concert series, battlefield wine and cheese tours, and classes on how to make your own wine at home.

While in Adams County, take a drive through the orchards of Adams County and head to Hauser Estates in Biglerville. Bring your own picnic and plan to buy a growler of hard cider or buy a bottle of wine and spend some time in this rural setting. The views of Hauser Estate will take your breath way. You will find dry white wines and smooth reds to enjoy while you sit back and relax to the quiet sounds of the country. Be sure to check their website calendar as you can always find something special happening at Hauser from open mic nights to wine pairings and more.

If you are looking for an outdoor concert where you can walk and enjoy the scenery of Lancaster County and a glass of wine, consider going to Nissley Vineyards in Bainbridge, Pa. Their summer concert series offers five wine on the lawn events. The concerts are held on Saturday evenings in their spacious grass area. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and a dinner and enjoy the night sky while listening to a variety of music. Nissley offers wines of all types for every wine drinker.

One cannot say summer without thinking of the wonderful places to go in and around Hershey. While known its chocolate, Hershey is also rich in museums and vineyards. The Cassel Vineyards, located on a beautiful horse farm, offers a variety of wines.  There are free ranging peacocks to help set the scene. Cassel Vineyards has summer music nights on Friday and Saturday evenings. Bring your own food or buy snacks at the vineyard; you will find a pleasant evening of “Music in the Vines.”

Don’t want to go out to a vineyard, go into Carlisle and enjoy the Castlerigg Wine Shop. Buy a glass of wine from local vineyards or ask to do a tasting of wines. A good place to go for wine and a snack with a group or on a date. A perfect place to sit for the Corvette parade in August. You can also buy bottles of wine there to bring home and have your own “wine on the lawn” evening.
